Tufi is located in Oro Province on the NE side of the mainland of Papua New Guinea approximately 250 kilometers east north east of the capital, Port Moresby.
Situated between Lae and Alotau on the tip of Cape Nelson, Tufi is 130km east of recognised areas such as Kokoda and 120km east south east of the city of Popondetta, the capital of Oro Province.
Tufi, originally a small government station, is still only accessible by air or sea. The flight time from Port Moresby to Tufi is approximately 50-55minutes. Domestic flights with Airlines PNG and local charter companies are available. Tufi is one of the only resorts where you fly directly into the resort. The airstrip is a 5 minute walk from the resort or a 3 minute drive. On arrival you will be met by the Tufi Resort staff and escorted to the resort. The resort, placed to perfection, is positioned in one of the most beautiful and pristine regions of PNG. Nestled on top of one of the many fjord hilltops Tufi offers convenient access to its clear waters and unmatched marine biodiversity. TUFI is host to some of the best diving in PNG. From large coral formations to sandy cays, deep fjords and the surrounding rainforest, TUFI is The Adventurer’s Paradise, offering trekking and exploring, cultural interaction, outrigger safaris, kayaking, fishing and bird watching.
Tufi Resort is one of the few destinations in Papua New Guinea to offer year round diving. The clear, calm and protected waters of the tropical fjords offer perfect diving for macro and muck diving, such as the popular House Reef which is only 3 minutes’ walk from the resort.
Tufi is a fully PADI certified diving resort which has been operating day dive trips to the outer reefs for over 15 years. Along with muck diving, Tufi offers amazing outer reef and wreck dives. The nearest open water reef is just 15 minutes by boat. With over 30 major dive sites in the nearby tropical waters of the Solomon Sea, there are many uncharted reefs waiting to be explored.
The stunning marine biodiversity makes this a unique reef system. Coral outcrops are so abundant with fish, that the saying “more fish than water” is a common phrase. Pelagic schools of tuna, Spanish mackerel, barracuda, white tip and black tip reef sharks, hammerheads and the rare white hammerheads, inhabit these exotic waters. Turtles, manta rays and eagle rays are also seen cruising by.
Experienced dive crews with quality gear, dive boats and local knowledge of the TUFI reef systems make diving at TUFI Resort an unforgettable experience. If not a diver, snorkelers can enjoy many of our outer reef coral shelves along with great snorkeling in the fjords. Fishing, kayaking, hobie cats are all on offer as other water activities to indulge in.
If above the ground is your preference the region offers short to medium trekking trips, bird watching, PNG Cultural demonstrations. For those that want a village experience we suggest an overnight stay in a village guesthouse which can truly immerse the visitor into the local culture of the area.
Tufi Resort provides for your convenience a Port Moresby office. The friendly team can arrange meet and greets and your transfers to Tufi and back. The Tufi Team also will assist in all domestic airline ticketing and issue that upon final receipt of your accommodation pre-payment.
