Fiji Holidays & Tourism
Where happiness finds you.
Bula
Often referred to as the ‘Crossroads of the South Pacific’ because of its geographical location, the Fiji Islands is a hospitable land of contrasts in people, flora, fauna and culture.
It is home to people who have been called the friendliest on earth. Fiji consists of 333 mountainous islands of volcanic origin scattered over the Pacific Ocean.
It is a cosmopolitan cocktail of culture, race and religion. It is a place where ‘ bula’, the traditional Fijian greeting, is a very special word and you can relax without a care in the world.
Fiji Islands has a population of close to 838,271 and a land mass of 18,333 square km taken up mostly by the two major islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

People
Fijians are regarded as some of the friendliest
people on the planet and their giant smiles, enthusiastic
Bula and fun-loving nature make an island stay all the
more memorable.
Fijians are an ethnically diverse people; a legacy of
almost a century as a British colony.
Indigenous Fijians (i-Taukei), account for just over
half of the 900,000 population. Culturally Melanesian,
the Fijian culture is hierarchical with the chiefly system
and many traditional practices still very dominant in
everyday life.
Indo-Fijians make up another significant portion of
the population – especially in the sugarcane belts of the
larger islands. They are descendants of Indian laborers
brought to Fiji by the British to work on sugar cane farms.
At the end of their indenture period, the laborers chose to
make Fiji their home and have resided here for generations.
Other minority races in Fiji include Part-Europeans, Chinese
and other Pacific Islanders.
-
Culture
Fiji sits at the heart of a culturally-rich region; on the border
of Melanesia and Polynesia and elements of these distinct
regions can be traced in Fijian culture. Outside large urban
areas, these cultural distinctions are relegated to particular
regions or islands. Micronesian culture has also found a
home on the islands of Kioa and Rabi in Northern Fiji. English
is the official language of government, education and commerce
and spoken by almost everyone. Fijian and Hindi are also widely
spoken with many people speaking more than one language.
Traditional Fijian food uses native ingredients like root crops
and leaves (taro, yams, cassava), fruits and seafood (fish,
shellfish, seaweed) marinated in coconut and lemon. These
are primarily cooked in an underground earth oven (lovo) or
eaten raw. Indian and Chinese ingredients and spices have
added an exciting dimension to Fijian food which is largely
absent in Pacific cuisine.
Christianity, Hinduism and Islam are practiced alongside
each other in Fiji and churches, temples and mosques are
a common feature of urban communities. Christianity is the
dominant religion among indigenous Fijians and minority
races while Hinduism and Islam is practiced largely by those
of Indian descent.

RAW Beauty
With over 300 islands as diverse as its people, Fiji
has everything you’d expect from a tropical island
paradise – soaring volcanic peaks, wide meandering rivers,
powder-puff, palm-fringed beaches and sparkling turquoise
water. The sunsets are pretty spectacular too!
Just over 100 islands in the group are inhabited with the
majority of people living on the larger islands of Viti Levu
and Vanua Levu. Most major towns and cities are located on
Viti Levu including the capital city of Suva and the Nadi
International Airport.
Although there are many scenic spots, pockets of Fiji can
still stun even the locals with their breathtaking beauty.
Some notable sites include the sheer, waterfall-fed canyon
of the ‘Upper Navua River’, the wild, windswept coast of the
‘Sigatoka Sand Dunes’ or the awe-inspiring ‘cathedral’ of
the Sawa-i-Lau caves.
